Enterprise CDE platforms are excellent for the core project team, but they have a friction problem at the edges:
- Every external party is expected to have an account, a licence and training — a real barrier for a one-off specialist subcontractor.
- Because of that friction, people fall back to email for "just this one file", and the model arrives outside the controlled environment.
- Once a file is off-platform, there is no reliable record of its revision, its integrity, or who actually received it.
The result is a CDE that is authoritative in the middle and leaky at the edges — which is precisely where coordination problems tend to originate.
